The photo above features Buster the Handy Dog. Buster is always ready for a task with enthusiasm ... please note the blur where his tail should be! Buster recently supervised a patch/spackle/paint job at his home and thought this would be a great time to remind everyone of some spring safety checks.

  • With winter behind us, check your garage for any signs of antifreeze that may have leaked from your car. Antifreeze has a sweetness about it that attracts pets and is extremely toxic. Use kitty litter to absorb the bulk of the liquid, place in the trash and use a non-toxic cleaner to wash any remaining residue.

  • Spring yard maintenance means lots of fun in the grass and around trees and shrubs, but it also means ticks! They are out like crazy so check yourself and your pets after all that digging, raking, planting and pruning.

  • All those lovely spring bulbs can give Fido a big tummy ache so keep your pooch away from lilies, tulips, daffodils, onion grass, garlic bulbs. Hyacinth, azaleas, rhododendrons and some common mulch (cocoa bean) can be hazardous.

  • Read the caution panels on all garden fertilizers you may use as well as certain pest baits, all of which can be toxic to your pet.

  • Before you know it the temperatures will start to climb and car temperatures soar in no time at all. As you take your dog around town be careful that it is not too warm in your car and always leave the windows open for plenty of ventilation.

  • Check your dog's collar that his ID tag is in tact. Free ID tags are always available from the Hudson Valley Humane Society. Click on my friend Sophie or Simone below and ask for one!

Have a safe and happy spring. Love, Buster and all of us here at the HVHS.
  • Ask Sophie

Sophie is a 1-year old Golden Retriever surrendered to the HVHS by a pet store. She was born with a neuro-muscular deficiency that has raised many questions, most remain unanswered. more
